Drunken Story Time With Ataru: The Curse of the Silver Plated World of Warcraft Art Set and Easy Bake Oven

A departure for this month, a full episode dedicated to my segment “Story-Time With Ataru.” Sorry, this podcast isn’t actually “Drunken.”I figured I’d get more downloads if I said I was drunk when I recorded it! Is that why you downloaded it?

Big O fans are in for a bit of treat, and if you’ve ever wanted to hear me have a 20 minute conversation with myself, you won’t want to miss this! And because I can, here is a screen cap from the intro of Great Teacher Onizuka.

Merry Christmas (An Update On All Things Ataru!)

Filed under: Podcast, Random, live blogging — Ataru December 25, 2007 @ 8:04 am

Live from my parent’s basement on Christmas morning - it’s the boring Christmas update!

First of all, Merry Fucking Christmas. If you are reading this on Christmas, you probably need a hug. Sorry, I can’t hug you. I’m out of state, sequestered in the basement of my parents home, writing my dim candle light. (Which is admittedly pointless.)

Some important podcasty stuff!

1) A podcast will make it out this week. It’s not a traditional podcast, but I think you guys will enjoy it. I had hoped to have it out this morning, but alas, it was a larger undertaking then I had originally anticipated, which requires additional editing and recording. I Don’t think you’ll be disappointed though.

2) Guests: Well this one isn’t working out exactly like I planned. Alot of people enthusiastically said they’d love to come on the podcast but then changed their minds and went into the witness protection program as soon as I attempted to take them up on the offer. And as much as I just want to have some awesome random fans on my podcast, I’m not sure that interesting to listeners… You know what, fuck it, if you listen to the podcast and you feel you have something to contribute, maybe you want to do a head-to-head review of an anime with me? Contact me, and lets see what you’re made of. (Please be aware that you may be edited mercilessly in post-production!)

3) Other projects: I’m working on a sister site, which will produce serialized science fiction/sci fi podcasts. It’s nowhere near ready, but in the next six months I’ll have to split my time between both projects. Looking to launch the project website officially in the summer. More to come as it is developed. If you feel its been too long without an episode of Northern Virginia Anime With Ataru - shoot me a line, put a fire under my ass and I’ll make something.

4) I’m way behind on my anime watching - I need some quick good recommendations. There was one that Konaka Chiaki was involved with that I wanted to see, but I can’t recall its name. -_- What are the kids talking about these days? If you don’t post, I’ll just review Ebichu every damn episode.

Now go, spend time with your family and resent them because you could be watching anime instead!

Me, I’m not (Ataru Love Mix)

I’m a big Nine Inch Nails fan. Trent Reznor is one of the few artists that I have truly followed in the last 15 years. I picked up Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D the past week. The album contains complete multi-track versions of all the songs on Year Zero. This man knows what his fans want. Trent even launched a remix site: http://remix.nin.com It’s teeming with awesome remixes. I only wish I had time to go through them all.

Ok, so by now you are going “What does this have to with Anime, Ataru?”

Sadly, I don’t have time right now to do a ‘real’ remix - but I wanted to share with you my quick and dirty remix featuring the closing to Love Love? It just sorta happened.

Give me some feedback! Maybe I’ll do some more.

Roger, AAAAAAAAH Defender of the Universe!

Big O has a special place in my heart as one of those existential, ‘what the fuck just happened?’ shows that I actually enjoyed (Serial Experiments Lain is another one.) Script writer Chiaki J. Konaka has been known to work on dark and cerebral shows. There were so many endearing qualities in Big O that added to the overall quirkiness of show. It drew me in. The film noir camp was offset with smart inside writing that was chock full of Western references and allusions. To top it all off, I absolutely love the opening, which is styled quite shamelessly after Queen’s Flash Gordon. I’ve even been tempted to find some Big O Dojinshi. Yes, I know Dorothy is a robot.

But now, I can begin to appreciate Roger Smith on an even higher level. How is that possible you ask? Many may recall Gargoyles, a real kick-ass animated television show that aired on the Disney Afternoon in the mid-nineties. Gargoyles set itself apart by actually attempting an intelligent contiguous story line. While the intended core audience was children the show had some complex story lines about time travel and causality. (See Vows)

So imagine my girlish delight when I was watching the first episode of season 2 of Big O, Roger the Wanderer. Roger Smith finds himself shuffling in the past, in the old Paradigm City, full and bustling with people.

And who do we see but these three guys!

In case you didn’t recognize them, that’s Broadway, Lexington, and Brooklyn. Though Broadway seems to have stolen Goliath’s Jaw.

/End Geek Transmission

Addendum: I will be attending The Gathering of the Gargoyles in 2008.
